The Open Insulin Foundation

The Open Insulin Foundation is a locally-founded nonprofit with a mission to make insulin affordable and accessible to all, using a community-based insulin production model. The AltruWeb team firmly believes that a life-saving drug like insulin should not be blocked by such a high pay wall, and that every individual deserves the right to survive. In order to support the Open Insulin project, we organized a bake sale in September 2023 at Vasona Park in Los Gatos, selling homemade chocolate chip cookies, snowball cookies, lightly-salted brownies and blueberry muffins. Through these efforts, we successfully exceeded our goal raised a total of $537 through in-person purchases and online donations, all of which was donated to Open Insulin's life saving research. In addition, we informed community members about the systemic barriers to insulin access, as well as how the Open Insulin Foundation uses a community-based model in order to research cheaper methods of production.
